What NOT to Feed Your Dog: The Hidden Risks Behind Popular Treats

At River Park Animal Hospital, we believe education is a key part of preventive pet care. Some pet treats may look harmless or even “natural,” but they can contain dangerous hormone-producing glands that pose long-term health risks to your dog.

❌ Here’s our updated Forbidden Treats List:

Animal Testicles (from cows, pigs, lamb, or poultry) We’ve seen pet owners unknowingly purchase treats made from raw animal testicles. These contain high levels of natural hormones, which can disrupt your dog’s endocrine system over time.

Necks – Chicken, Pig, Duck, etc. Unless fully cleaned, animal necks often retain thyroid or parathyroid glands. These glands secrete hormones that, when consumed repeatedly, may lead to hormonal imbalance or overactive thyroid function in dogs. Commercial treats may not guarantee safe removal of glands.

Trachea Chews Like necks, beef tracheas can retain active thyroid tissue. Long-term use has been linked to parathyroid gland overstimulation in some dogs.

Antlers and Hard Bones These are known to cause cracked or broken teeth. Dental trauma often leads to costly extractions and pain.

At River Park Animal Hospital, we provide trusted veterinary care in Sugar Land, Rosenberg, Richmond, and Fort Bend County, helping pet parents understand what’s truly safe. Dr. Luo and our team are here to answer your questions and recommend safe, healthy alternatives for your dog.
