Puss caterpillars, also called “asps,” live in Texas and can be active in late summer and fall. Their fluffy appearance hides venomous spines that cause a painful sting on contact. Keep curious noses, paws, and little hands away!
Pet stung? Move them away without touching the caterpillar directly and call your veterinarian. Don’t give medications or home remedies without veterinary guidance. Trouble breathing, significant facial swelling, or collapse requires immediate emergency care.
Stay alert during walks and backyard play—and admire the fluff from a distance!
