Leg pain

A few months ago, an 8-year-old Yorkshire Terrier came to our animal hospital because of persistent leg pain.

During the exam, our veterinarian did not only evaluate his bones and joints—we also discovered that he was overweight. In addition to medication for his leg discomfort, our team created a personalized nutrition consulting and weight-management plan to support his long-term health.

Three months later, the results were truly inspiring. He lost almost 2 pounds—about 30% of his body weight. His pet parent told us his legs feel much better, his activity level has increased, and he seems brighter, happier, and even younger again. The first photo shows him before the program, and the second photo shows his progress after following the plan.

Why does weight matter so much for joint and bone health?

At our veterinary clinic, we see every day how excess weight places significant pressure on the knees, hips, and spine. The heavier a pet is, the greater the stress on the joints and cartilage, which can accelerate wear and tear and lead to arthritis. Overweight dogs are also more likely to suffer ligament injuries. Fat tissue produces inflammatory substances that worsen joint inflammation and pain. When joints hurt, dogs move less, muscles become weaker, and even more stress is placed on the joints—creating a painful cycle that affects long-term health and quality of life.
